Few field tests are more extreme than those that happen north of the Arctic Circle — and one of our customers recently shared an incredible story from Alaska’s remote North Slope.
The raid on our Bearikade stash happened the night of August 30 on the Arey Peninsula about four miles west of the town of Kaktovik, Alaska.
It was very likely an adult(s) because we had seen a total of eight adults in the previous 24 hours. Before we went to sleep, at a spot more than a 1/4 mile from our food stash, we had to haze two polar bears from our kitchen with horns and flash-bang pistols. They weren’t very impressed but decided to move on anyway.
Pretty exciting. We were glad to have your gear protecting our food.

Kirk and his team were exploring one of the wildest coastlines on Earth when their Bearikades were put to the ultimate test. A polar bear encounter isn’t something most backpackers ever have to worry about, but in Alaska’s high Arctic, it’s a real possibility.
Their food cache, stored safely in Bearikade canisters, withstood the visit unscathed, keeping essential supplies secure in a place where resupply simply isn’t an option. We’re grateful to hear our gear helped keep their expedition running smoothly.
